PCAI COLLECTION ARTIST SOPHIA AL-MARIA

wins 2025 Frieze Artist Award

PCAI Collection artist Sophia Al-Maria is the winner of the Frieze Artist Award 2025.

The artist will create a makeshift comedy club in the Frieze London tent and perform a live set every day at the fair

Al-Maria’s new commission, Wall-Based Work, will take the form of a ‘drop-down’ comedy show, performed daily at the fair by the artist inside the Frieze London tent. Responding to this year’s Frieze Artist Award theme – shared across London and Seoul – of ‘future commons’, the work uses the language and rituals of comedy to talk about things that aren’t necessarily funny.

“The London-based Qatari American Sophia Al-Maria, who presented a performance at the fair back in 2014 and returns an internationally lauded artist. Her commission marks a bold new direction in her practice, as she stages a live comedy club within the fair. Elsewhere, the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship continues into 2025–26, and I’m pleased to include projects by recent fellows Sophia Harari and Amrit Sanghera.”
