On the occasion of the Sheltered Gardens publication launch, PCAI organizes a modular evening dedicated to sheltered gardens in relation to the notions of gender, identity and fluidity within them, at the National Museum of Contemporary Art ΕΜΣΤ. Linder, Chris Kraus, Phoebe Giannisi, Kika Kyriakakou, VASKOS (Vassilis Noulas & Kostas Tzimoulis) will participate in the event through lectures, screenings, readings, interventions and performances. Alexis Bistikas’ film The Clearing (1993), starring Derek Jarman, will be presented on the occasion of the event.

Sheltered Gardens bilingual publication is the culmination of the homonymous hybrid, visual arts research and exhibition inaugurated on September 22, 2022, at the J. & A. Diomedes Botanic Garden, in Athens. Featuring more than 35 international artists, writers and performers, the project, curated by Kika Kyriakakou, was inspired by H.D.’s poem Sheltered Garden (1916) and it was unfolded through a contemporary art group exhibition at the Diomedes Botanic Garden, complimented by a series of performances, an online, digital exhibition and a bilingual, limited-edition publication.

Accommodated within the physical and digital environment of Diomedes Botanic Garden, one of the largest and most important botanic gardens in the Mediterranean, PCAI’s programme featured works by Margarita Athanasiou, Eleni Bagaki, Michel Delsol, Kathleen Hanna & the Julie Ruin, Evan Ifekoya, Irini Karayannopoulou, Lito Kattou, Chris Kraus, Linder Sterling, Polonca Lovšin, Campus Novel, Selina Nwulu, Leda Papaconstantinou, Eva Papamargariti, Afroditi Psarra, Gloria Steinem, Eva Stefani, Maria Varela, VASKOS (Vassilis Noulas & Kostas Tzimoulis), Marina Velisioti, Sasha Velour, Phoebe Giannisi, Ermira Goro, I broke the vase, Dimitra Ioannou, Chrysanthi Koumianaki, arisandmartha (Aris Papadopoulos & Martha Pasakopoulou), VIGIL (Despina Sanida-Krezia & Fotini Stamatelopoulou), Iria Vrettou.

Sheltered Gardens edition is published by Futura Publications and includes original texts, essays and poems by Kika Kyriakakou, Chris Kraus, Selina Nwulu, Phoebe Giannisi, Fay Zika, I broke the vase, VASKOS (Vassilis Noulas & Kostas Tzimoulis) and Dimitra Ioannou, dedicated to sheltered gardens, ecosystems and the problematic issues that emerge in contemporary women’s gardens as well as rich photographic material from the artistic programme in the Diomedes Botanic Garden.

The volume is available at Politeia Bookstore. Sheltered Gardens programme and publication were made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture, the British Council Greece, and Flunet Productions.
